that obama is not a good debater. it is not that obama was off his game, that is his game. if he does not have a prompter, he is not good. you see it in his press conferences where he does not have a prompter. he has never been good at conferences. he rambles. the press has been unimpressed with what he does. he can decide how long he wants to take for an answer. this is who he is. it is going to be at a town hall the next one. he has more ability to connect with an audience than romney, so he will have an advantage in the second debate that he did not have been the first. >> would you rather be good or lucky? 7.8% unemployment rate. that is pretty good news. >> unless you actually look at the numbers. if you look at those getting new jobs, aut 114,000. the need to have 150 to stay at the same rate. what has been happening is you have people leaving the work force, retiring, or -- wait a minute, nina -- or when you become chronically unemployed, over one year, you drop off the rolls and you are not put in the denominator. when that happens, the rate will fall artificially. >> psycholo

unrecognizable obama during the debate. then the next day he kind of came alive. he was on fire again, et cetera. has his camp said anything about his new strategy or returning to the old strategy? anything to that degree? >> reporter: right. well, they have talked about the president responding to the romney that they said showed up at the debates. the president very aggressive now and all indications are that's the strategy into the next debate as well. one thing we're seeing is that top advisers for the president are also still attacking mitt romney for his performance during that debate. the on the sunday morning shows, a couple of top advisers, david axelrod and robert gibbs calling it him dishonest. one said governor romney has a strange relationship with the truth. >> mitt did a superb acting job. you know, he did everything but learn tap dance. >> he was dishonest when he said he never proposed $5 trillion in tax cuts, that was dishonest. you said on the broadcast to 70 million americans, i will repeal obama care, but i will still be able to cover people with pre-existing conditions. ten

obama in debate number two, he can still keep it cool and classy while letting biden go all the way off the leash. but even before the first presidential debate, the match-up between the two guys on the bottom of the tickets promise to be a must-watched event. what we saw in the debate between president obama and governor romney was an exchange of ideas. both share a practical approach to stimulating economic growth but have different ways of getting us there. the two guys that we're going to be watching on thursday, pragmatism doesn't begin to describe them. pugilistic, not pragmatic describes these guys. get ready for a clash of the i had i can't logs. they're champions of the sweet science of political and economic thought of their respective parties. the golden boy of the economic doctrine. ryan the self-described -- the architect of the conservative platform, upon which the gop now stands. the plan to slash the deficit by gutting social programs and his party is saying he built that. in the other corner, a granddaddy of the base. 29 years old, joe biden became one of the youngest p

the fact that was this was the first debate and strong performance by romney and weak by obama, probably means romney will at the end of the series have a gain. the gain is the impact is generally two to three points which may not sound like much, but when you're in a close as a race as this one is, and it is close. the track is five points as you said. take a look. there's 91 polls in the last 30 days, 91 national polls, not state polls, national polls, and the margin's been over two points. if mitt romney moves up two points and president obama moves down two points, there's another contest here with somebody else in front. lou: look at the swing states, looking at rasmussen, romney aheadn virginia and in ohio, romney a point behind the president where there was a significant lead, as you know, for the president. this is having some influence early. is it likely to be more profound as days go on? >> well, in all likelihood, this will build itself in for three or four more days here. there could be a lengthened -- and then the vice presidential debate that i suspect ryan takes care of b

%. many many ways this mirrors what happened to the presidential debate? everyone thought president obama would win, so there's great expectations here for ryan. how much of a microscope do you think there will be on him? >> i'm not so sure about that. i mean, i don't dispute your polling there, but i think most people understand that joe bayeden has been debating for a long time. i mean, since the early 1900s. he has been debating. >> he knows his stuff. >> right. i think what you see, though, in some of that polling is that some of the, you know, joe biden as of late put his foot in his mouth a few times in very public ways. he said that the middle class was crushed under, you know, the policies of obama and biden, and he said some things that were problematic. s however, paul is a smart guy. he has committed his life to understanding the problems of our economy, presenting a plan for the american people, so i think that paul is going to do -- going to do a great job, but i also think it's very important for people to understand, and i think people realize that joe biden is a gifted or

obama debate a lot in primaries when i was with edwards and clinton and john ed wards. this is the guy who showed up. he's a good debeirut. but he doesn't enjoy. it you look at this. romney looked like -- i am here, this is great, i am having fun. he really did. and obama looked sort of sour and like it was another headache to have to be there. that won't help. the question here, rom flow's supporters needed to be reinvigorated. he definitely got that out of tonight. what did happen with the undecided? did women move? you know, is that enthusiasm going to spread out and show up in the differential in terms of who will vote? >> was there body language you noticed? >> to the extent, i thought they both behaved with considerable dignity and respect. so i don't think anybody lost on body language. but the president was continually looking down and he was sometimes having an expression on his face that may have seemed like a smirk. that never helps you. they really never do. on balance, i thought that governor romney's body language was good. the expression on his face, an expression, are f
